About
The Site
Thanks for visiting
TheRailRoader.com. This site was created for the main purpose of
providing a central place on the internet for railroaders to get
information and to share ideas and thoughts with other railroaders.
I created this site around September 2004 when I completed my
conductors training on the Portland Subdivision and had no clue where
to find the information I needed to do my job safely and efficiently.
So I scoured through web sites, the UP employee site, and other
resources to help acquire the tools necessary to perform my
job...mostly information. As most of you know, the job of a freight
conductor covering several subdivisions requires a lot of territory
knowledge, yard familiarity, and some actual railroading skill. Since I
knew I was lacking the skills, I figured I should at least have the
other stuff! So my search for info led me to build this site.
This web site is by no means all inclusive. Nor do I feel all of the
information is gospel truth. It is provided as a reference to those of
you who want and need it and should be used for informational purposes
only. I have also included other items in the site that you may find
useful. Things such as ways to save money on items we need and use
everyday. I also provide pertinent union and railroad news, as well as
other items simply just for fun.
Basically, this site was created for you. It is designed to be easy to
navigate and is updated frequently so there is always new ideas and
information for you to check out.
Remember to check out our RR Forum. This is the place for
you to contribute to the site with your words of wisdom, sarcasm, or
just plain complaining.
About Me
Now about me...I am a freight conductor for the UP on the Portland Hub.
I was hired by the RR back in May 2004 after deciding to make a career
change. I was self employed as a general contractor since 1994 and had
other businesses over the past prior to that.
I have decided that this new career as a railroader is what you make of
it. I have spent time on trains listening to guys complain for 14 hours
about how crappy this job is and I have spent the same amount of time
listening to guys who are making the best of it. My philosophy is this,
it can be miserable or it can be good, it all depends on my attitude.
Yes, the company is there to mess me over and try to eliminate my job,
but I have been in the real world working for a living...it isn't a
whole lot easier there either.
I am married and have a bunch of kids and enjoy doing stupid stuff like
creating web sites and remodeling houses. I also enjoy eating,
unfortunately that contributed to me gaining 27 pounds in the first 6
months of me wasting my life away on a train. Oh well, we only live
once!
I hope you find the information and resources on this site useful. Feel
free to contact
me if you have any questions or suggestions. I am always open to
new information and ideas.
Thanks for visiting,
Keith Carey
